A contemporary mise-en-scène which reflects on the fertility of our times.
The relationship between Yerma and her husband is deteriorating because she cannot get pregnant, even if there is a desire. Life goes on and sadness takes over Yerma: the nostalgia for a potential teen love that never happened, the disillusionment of the friendships that leave because of their children, the loss of youth and the marital home that becomes an authentic prison. A crude portrait of the most private levels of our society where the most real tragedies occur, the intimate tragedy of Yerma, the tragedy of not being able to disengage from her own body. A contemporary mise-en-scène which reflects on the fertility of our times.
We soon wondered if Yerma was indeed a classic …? If so, we should be able to imagine her walking among us, answering with her words to our doubts, fears, uncertainties… Her attitude would disturb us as much as it would attract us: sometimes we would find her reactionary, other times too modern. We would love and hate her at the same time. If it was a classic it would not be her conflict only, but one that could be extrapolated to our world. Each situation, each character, each sentence would resonate with us as if the couple, the lover, a friend or a mother was telling us so. We would meet Juan in the office, Victor in the bar, María pushing the stroller. The old men would give us advice that we did not understand and the smile of a couple of young women would amuse us when we least expected it. What would give us more headache would be discovering that work steals our time and energy while searching for unclear benefits, meanwhile the people we love would move away without us being too aware of it. And then the discomfort; the permanent discomfort that governs everything, the discomfort that does not leave, that devours everything without ever being satiated. And little by little Yerma is very close to us. Yerma lives deep within us. A Yerma who is our age, who fights like all of us for the same illusions, day by day, who is ashamed of the same fears… And then a doubt … A great, huge doubt. Are we barren? Is the world where we live barren? Is still there a remote possibility of making our time and place fruitful? And if it existed… Do we know how to love well enough to let something good to germinate?
