What if Don Juan were a woman?
Don Juan is an irresistible seducer. Juana is an irresistible seductress.
Don Juan goes from bed to bed. Juana goes from bed to bed.
Don Juan cheats, he leaves. Juana cheats, she leaves.
Don Juan seeks love. Juana seeks love.
Don Juan goes to the psychoanalyst. Juana faces a trial.
While John continues his life, Juana dies.
No, they kill Juana.
Josep Palau i Fabre states in 1976: “No, Don Juan is not a libertine. He is much more: he is the destroyer of certain calcified social structures”. And it is true, his Don Juan is not the character who gave his name to the myth of the insatiable seducer, the tireless conqueror, but a man in search of freedom and absolute love.
We Projecte Ingenu ask ourselves who, almost in the second decade of the 21st century, breaks social structures with this type of behavior. The answer for us was clear: a woman. Even today, a free woman, a Juana, is a danger for our society. And we want to believe that we do not betray Palau i Fabre if, at a given moment, we turn his Don Juan into a woman.
The challenge was to build a diptych with Don Juan and Juana from the words of Palau i Fabre. We played with five texts to build a collage that tells us the story of one and the other. And, immersed in the palauifabrian world, we borrowed the title of a poem, “The Panther”, to name our Juanna. Ups! “La Mujer Pantera” is also the spansih name of the film “Cat People”, isn’t it? Yes, a 1942 film directed by Jacques Tourneur. And what’s that about? A woman lives frightened by the belief that she is affected by an ancient legend: if she sexually excites herself she will become a panther and devour the object of her desire… Ah, yes? If. Well… Silence. Camera Rolling Action.
